Alicia Lucas never really felt that she had sparkle. But after months of hard work at her local Anytime Fitness, she was able to reduce her medications, gain self-esteem, and dropped over 100 pounds!
Alicia’s fitness journey can be described with one word: Sparkle. “Finding my sparkle has been my mission since a friend told me I had lost it. But honestly, I never had a true sparkle. I’ve suffered from horrendous self-esteem and severe depression for years. The only way of life I knew was pain, fear, and sadness. I couldn’t look in a mirror without being disgusted at the image looking back at me.”
The Weight Gain
The feelings of self-hatred started when Alicia was nine years old, after dealing with emotional trauma of being molested. “I had always been “chubby” but it was after that summer when I really started to gain weight. Food became my source of relief and comfort. Binging food numbed the pain —at least temporarily.”
Moment of Truth
The larger she became the more she hated everything about herself, which caused a viscous circle of eating. “My highest weight was around 345 lbs. By the age of 36, I had high blood pressure and high cholesterol. I was pre-diabetic and had already developed diabetic ulcers on both shins that ended up having to be treated weekly. I was depressed and had been on anti-depressants since college.”
Alicia’s life has completely transformed since she took that first step through the Anytime Fitness door last March, at 338 pounds. She decided to not do it alone and hired trainer, Kyle Watson, to help her get into shape. “It’s amazing the support system that I have found, not only at the gym but from my friends and family, as well!”
She tracks her nutrition and aims to stay within 1300-1500 calories per day, have protein with every meal, eat mostly unprocessed, natural foods, and each day strive for 40% protein, 40% carbs and 20% fats. Her favorite snack is greek yogurt.
“I’m lucky when it comes to workouts. I just do what Kyle tells me to do. I do three strength-training workouts a week (Tuesdays, Thursdays and either Saturday or Sunday) each focusing on different areas, followed by at least a half hour of cardio.”
Other “Woohoo” Moments
Alicia has participated in four 5K races and two mud races! She’s proud to now be in a size 14. “No longer in the plus size section,” she explained.
The Reward of Hard Work
Alicia’s journey is ongoing but in only a year she lost 136 pounds and over 70 inches from her entire body. “I’m no longer disgusted when I see my reflection in the mirror. In fact, for the first time in my life, I see a beautiful person looking back at me. I can honestly say I have found my Sparkle.”
“Sometimes it’s in the smile on my face or twinkle in my eye… other times it’s the sparkle of my sweat as I am going through a tough workout. I have found happiness, strength, and self-confidence that I had never felt before. I’m excited about what the future holds. Nothing will hold me back now!”
