Q&A with Meghan from the Staunton, VA Anytime Fitness
Q: What brought you into Anytime Fitness? What was your motivation?
A: On June 12, 2003, I donated a kidney to my then fiancé, now husband, who was struggling with end stage renal disease as his kidneys were only functioning at 18%. I was only 19 years old at the time of the donation.
Years after the transplant, I came to Anytime Fitness because I was down and depressed about myself. Still carrying weight from having a baby a few years prior, I was not a happy mother or wife.
From the beginning I had a huge support system in my mother (who actually joined Anytime Fitness with me!), my husband, and my daughter who is only 6. She thought it was “cool” that mommy went and worked out.
I also found an amazing amount of motivation and support from the wonderful owners of our Anytime Fitness in Staunton/Fishersville, Va.
Q: What’s your favorite part of being a gym member?
A: When I walk in, I am 100% comfortable with myself and being around everyone. There is a “family” feel to the atmosphere. I have been to other gyms before and allowed myself to get discouraged because I didn’t feel that I would ever be successful there. When I leave Anytime, I feel absolutely wonderful.
Q: What’s your favorite workout or exercise?
A: The elliptical is probably my favorite cardio workout at Anytime Fitness (it did take some time getting used to). I crank my music up and go! I also really enjoy the leg press machine and doing lat pulls in the cable area. We just got the Jacob’s Ladder equipment, which I am excited to check out!
Q: What advice would you give someone considering starting a fitness program?
A: DO IT NOW! Do it for yourself. When you take care of yourself, it helps you to be able to take care of your family and be a happier person for yourself and those around you. I have never ever felt better in my life than I do now. I am a better wife and mom because of it. When you start seeing even the smallest changes in your body, it gives you more motivation and a feeling of “I actually CAN do this!” Little by little, I started donating clothes in my closet that no longer fit me.
Q: What’s been the toughest obstacle to overcome in sticking to exercise?
A: My busy schedule. BUT I make it work because it is such a big part of my life now and I couldn’t imagine not doing it for myself. There are some mornings I am there at 4 am, some nights at 10 pm. I make it work.
Q: Who has been the most motivating person in your life?
A: Since I have joined Anytime Fitness, my entire family has been so motivating to me. With positive thoughts and reminders of how hard I have worked, it pushed me to work even harder. My mom has been a big supporter for me. She joined Anytime Fitness with me and she reminds me of my hard work and how proud she is of me. We enjoy going to the gym together. Just the feeling of knowing someone is there with you, gives you a push! I am so grateful to my family for being so supportive in this journey of mine!
Q: What does your breakfast usually consist of?
A: On a normal day, boiled eggs, turkey bacon, and some fruit. Breakfast is probably my favorite meal and if I get protein in first thing in the morning, I feel like I am already starting my day off right.
Q: What changes have you noticed from a consistent workout routine?
A: There have been changes in my attitude about myself. I am a much happier person. I have upper body strength, which I never had. I am extremely proud of the hard work I have put in at Anytime Fitness.
Q: What was your original health and fitness goal(s)?
A: In the beginning, I honestly did not think that I would meet any goal I had for my health or any fitness goal. I wanted to lose weight and be more toned. When I started losing weight, I set higher and higher goals and have met them. I like what I see when I look in the mirror, and for me, that wasn’t always the case.
Q: QUICK QUESTIONS:
- If I was stranded on a deserted island, I couldn’t live without: I could not live without my sunglasses and some music!
- My favorite cheat meal is: Pizza! I don’t get it often, but when I do, I remind myself that the next day I will be working even harder at the gym, but it is worth it!
- #1 on my bucket list: skydiving!
- On a perfect weekend, I am usually: At home spending quality time outside with my family, friends, and dogs! We like to spend time outside on our deck grilling out, sitting, and chatting with friends and family or sitting around a campfire in the backyard.
