A wise person once wrote, “Life is all about how you handle plan B.” There’s no better or more inspiring example of this than Tammy Landeen. She’s our My Anytime Story Grand Prize Winner!
Chosen from more than 3,000 contest entries, judges cited Tammy’s “remarkable courage and recovery from a devastating injury” among the many reasons for her selection. Please join us in congratulating her!
Tammy was presented with a pair of $10,000 checks at her Anytime Fitness club in Milton, FL. One check is for her to use as she pleases. The other is for the Paralyzed Veterans Racing Team – the program to which Tammy indicated she’d “pay fitness forward,” if she won.
Tammy’s Inspiring Story
A 10-year US Army veteran home from deployment, Tammy’s legs were paralyzed in a horseback riding accident in 2005. Angry and in pain, she rarely left the house for the next seven years, and gained 70 pounds in the process. She lost hope.
In 2013, while her husband was deployed to Afghanistan, Tammy decided it was time for a change. She gathered up her courage and tried to join a local gym, but were not willing to accommodate her needs, and she went home discouraged.
A few weeks later, she learned about a new gym had opened, Anytime Fitness in Milton, FL, and she decided to give it another try. Carissa, the gym manager, said they’d do anything in their power to ensure her success and pointed her to an “amazing” personal trainer, Justin, and they’ve been working together ever since.
From Homebound to Competitive Handcycling Athlete
While working to improve her health and fitness at the gym, Tammy was given the opportunity to join the Paralyzed Veterans Racing Team. She took it and never looked back. Since then, Tammy has completed a paratriathlon, a 50K, and numerous marathons across the country. She placed 3rd in the women’s H3 division rankings by the US Handcycling Federation. Tammy has also taken up SCUBA diving and has even returned to horseback riding.
“I have discovered a new passion in life that has not only helped me cope mentally but physically as well. It’s amazing how much better a mom and wife I am. There are so many things I’ve been able to do that I wouldn’t have even thought to try to do.”
Todd and Contressa Adamson, the owners of the Anytime Fitness club in Milton, say they could not possibly be more proud of Landeen – or the trainers and staff members who helped her realize many of her dreams.
“Tammy is a true inspiration to hundreds of other members at our club. They see how hard she trains and it motivates them to work harder to achieve their own goals. She’s a tireless athlete who served our country as a soldier for 10 years in the army. I can’t think of anyone who is more deserving of this honor than Tammy.”
