It’s Spring! There’s no better time to take your workouts outside and enjoy the fresh air. We hope you’ll be meeting up with one of the many Anytime Fitness locations that’ll be offering free outdoor workouts every Saturday in May. We’ve prepared a list of must haves that’ll help you have the best experience possible during an outdoor workout!
1. Moisture Wicking Tops and Shorts
The best way to stay comfortable in warm temperatures is by wearing moisture wicking clothing – especially your top. As you’ll be out in the grass and might be doing push-ups or crunches, you might also consider wearing pants to protect your knees. But if the weather is hot, wear shorts or capris (just remember your beach towel – see below).
2. Supportive Shoes
Shoes are essential for outdoor workouts to protect your feet from the elements. Choose a pair of supportive shoes that’ll help you run, jump, lunge, and more. You might want to choose an older pair of shoes due to the venue. Make sure the pair you choose will appreciate the grass, dirt, and sweat. After the workout, leave them outside to dry so they’re ready for the next sweaty outdoor workout.
3. Sunscreen & Hat
You’ll definitely want to layer on sunscreen before heading outdoors. Choose sunscreen that’s water proof and also stands up to sweat. Consider wearing a hat to double the protection for your face. It might also help keep the sweat from dripping in your eyes, and the sunscreen, too.
4. Beach Towel + Small Hand Towel
Consider bringing two towels with you: a beach towel to serve as a mat for any exercises that requires you to be on the ground and a small hand towel for wiping your brow. The beach towel will be for comfort, but can double as a seat protector on your way home from the workout. The small towel will help keep sweat, sunscreen, and everything else out of your eyes!
5. Water Bottle
A water bottle is probably the most important item you’ll need to bring. It’s always important to stay hydrated while working out. When you take your workouts outside, the warmer temperatures and humidity will increase the importance significantly. Be sure to come to the workout hydrated and sip on your water bottle during breaks. Try to make it through an entire bottle, if you can.
6. Plastic Bag
A small plastic bag can hold your keys while you’re working out – that way they’re easier to spot in the grass. Set the bag on the edge of your beach towel, if needed, to hold it down if the wind picks up. Then, after your workout, your sweaty towel and sweaty clothes (if you bring a change) can go in the plastic bag for transport home.
7. A Great Attitude
The most important thing to bring is a great attitude. You have the privilege of enjoying the great outdoors, you’re moving your body and releasing endorphins, and get to meet all the great people that can support you as you get to a healthier place. What better way to start your Saturday morning? So, put a smile on your face, enjoy the process, and let the good feeling you get at the end of the workout motivate you the rest of the week.
