Blazin’ Buffalo Turkey Burger Recipe

blazin-buffalo-turkey-burger-recipe

Turkey burgers get a bad rap. If you’ve ever tried to grill a turkey burger before, you know it can be a struggle to get a juicy burger. Because it’s such a lean meat, it tends to dry out at warp speed, and who wants a dry, hockey puck of a burger? Nobody. But we promise you can make a flavorful, juicy turkey burger!

There are two keys to unlocking a tasty turkey burger. The first key is what’s inside—instead of just forming some ground turkey into patties and slapping it on the grill, this recipe has tons of flavorful add-ins: creamy blue cheese, spicy buffalo sauce, and crisp green onions help make this burger out-of-this-world flavorful. And not only do the add-ins help up the taste and the moisture, they also stretch the turkey to get you six giant burgers out of one pound of meat.

The second key is a very gentle touch when cooking. The more you handle the meat, the more juices you lose. This recipe recommends only flipping the burgers once—and never, ever press down on any kind of burger with your spatula. That’s just pressing out all the juices! It’s especially important to reserve all the fat and juices you can, so make sure to let the burgers rest for 5-10 minutes before serving. That makes sure all the juices redistribute into the burger, instead of ending up on your chin or plate when you bite in.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground turkey
  • 1 large egg
  • ¾ cup whole wheat breadcrumbs
  • ½ cup crumbled blue cheese
  • ½ cup buffalo wing sauce
  • 2 tablespoons minced fresh parsley
  • 3 green onions, sliced thinly
  • ½ teaspoon dried dill
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • Whole wheat hamburger buns
  • Your favorite burger toppings

Directions

  1. Preheat a grill over medium-high heat. Oil the grill grates.
  2. In a large bowl, using clean hands, mix together all the ingredients. Form into six burger patties. Grill on preheated grill for 5-7 minutes on one side, flip and grill for an additional 3-5 minutes.
  3. Serve on a whole wheat bun topped with your favorite burger toppings.

Cook’s Notes

  • Like it spicy? The listed amount of buffalo sauce gets you a medium-spice burger. Feel free to add more buffalo sauce and more breadcrumbs to get a spicer patty. Or, top it with sliced jalapenos!
  • Can’t find whole wheat breadcrumbs in the store? No problem. Just toast a piece or two of whole wheat bread, and then send it for a trip in the food processor. Bingo! Whole wheat bread crumbs
