We Tried It: Stand Up Paddleboarding

The hottest trend in the fitness world right now has to be stand up paddleboarding (SUP). This activity offers a great full-body workout and calorie burn! Bonus: no experience is needed and big waves aren’t required. Just get your hands on a board and paddle, grab your swimsuit, and get ready to burn-baby-burn!

We tried it, and we loved it! Here’s why:

Enjoy some inner “om”

Turns out the calming effects of water hold true even when your heart rate is up! There’s something very peaceful about being on the water with just a board and paddle.

Full body fitness

How many activities truly use each and every muscle to create this total body workout? Muscles you never knew you had will be sore the next day.

Serious calorie burn

We’re talking more than running. With a little effort, you can expect a calorie burn greater than that of a treadmill workout of equal duration.

Mix it up

There’s more to do on a paddleboard than just paddle! Mix up your workout with yoga, or body weight exercises like squats, planks, and push-ups!

Rookie status

Even the most uncoordinated and athletically un-inclined individuals will have no trouble getting the hang of it. The board in surprisingly stable and will feel like second nature after a few minutes. Practice makes perfect!

Low-impact, high-reward

As long as you can swim and carry a life on board, you can experience this workout without worry. If you have joint issues, add paddleboarding to your low-impact exercise repertoire!

Time well spent

Although owning a paddleboard can be pricey, the increasing popularity works in your favor. Many lakes, rivers, beaches, and outfitters now offer paddleboard rentals by the hour, day, or weekend. Hourly rates are relatively affordable — about amount that you’d expect to pay for a group fitness class.

Take a stand–this activity is a must-do before summer’s end!
