As the snow fell here in Minnesota yesterday, I caught myself thinking about how in 10 weeks, I’ll be running my first half marathon. Crazy, right? But I’ve secretly wanted to run a half marathon for the last 5 years. And you know what? I am finally going to do it.
My running story
I started running when I was young. My father was a runner and encouraged my sister and I to join him in small town road races throughout the summer. I reluctantly obliged, following in my big sister’s footsteps (pun intended), not wanting to be left out. Continuing to follow my sister, I ran cross country in junior high and 1 year of high school, but I lost my gusto for running and focused more on other sports, and well, just being a high school girl. Enough said, right?
In college, I ran occasionally to stay in shape, but didn’t compete in any races. It wasn’t until after college when I truly found my passion for running. I started exercising more regularly and soon began signing up for 5k races again.
Over the past 3 years, I’ve participated in several 5 and 10K races, marathon relays, and one 17K (10.5 miles). This year I’m taking the plunge to cross half marathon off my fitness bucket list.
Race day attitudes
Before I go any farther, I have to let you in on one more secret. I LOVE the training aspect of preparing for the race. However, I HATE the actual race itself. I could rattle off excuses for why I feel this way, but I’ll spare you for now.
Most importantly, I finished a 10K race this past fall that turned my race day attitude around and increased my confidence to actually do this….or so I think! I may be crawling in blood, sweat, and tears, but I plan on finishing what I’ve started.
The game plan
I still consider myself a novice runner. Currently, I’m running about 3 days/week with an average peak of up to 5 miles under my belt. That said, if I can do this, know that you can too. It comes down to mind over matter.
Starting today, I’ve got my mind in the right place and am ready to hit the road running, literally!
Over the next 10 weeks, I’ll be sharing with you…
- My training program
- Race-related nutrition
- Injury prevention
- Jogging jams (music is a must for me)
- Plus, the trials and tribulations of my half marathon journey
Let’s do this together
Whether you are ready to take the leap like and try a half-marathon or you just want to complete your first 5K. Let’s train together and accomplish our goals, no matter how big or how small. Find a race in your area and sign-up! That’s the first big step! You can do it.
