12 Small Tasks That Will Lighten Your Life

Junk Drawer

The holidays are coming. Fall will soon change to winter and hunkering down for colder climates. What better time than right now to tackle a few tasks that will lighten your life? I’m not just talking about simple tricks to physically clean up your spaces (though those are certainly helpful!), but ideas that lift your spirit and de-clutter your noggin. They can do wonders for rebooting your attitude and pointing you in a bright direction.

  1. Clean out your junk drawer. It’s pretty satisfying to clear the slate on this go-to drawer. Sort through what’s there to trash, recycle, donate or repurpose your existing items and then start fresh with key items in order.
  2. Straighten your garage. You see this clutter every time you leave and return home. Separate items into “Save,” “Sell,” and “Donate” piles, and buy some plastic bins, hooks or extra shelving if you need extra help to organize what’s remains.
  3. Start a “returns & exchanges” bin. You’re more likely to make a return or exchange promptly if the item(s) is prepped and ready to be brought to the store with its receipt, and kept in a handy space like your car or entryway.
  4. Find 5 great crockpot recipes. Preparing dinner after a long day can be a real drag, but by pre-selecting a few easy crockpot recipes, all you have to do is throw in the ingredients in the morning and flip the switch to “ON.”
  5. Meditate for 10 minutes. Looking for some serious enlightenment? Give meditation a try. After some practice, it’s quite likely to provide you with mental clarity.
  6. Cut up fresh fruits and veggies for the week. Meal prep helps you make healthful choices throughout the week. Prep and divide your favorite cut-up veggies and fruit into baggies or bins to keep on hand for light, nutritious sides or snacks.
  7. Print a training schedule or workout calendar for the month. I’ve always found that working out helps clear my head. By having a plan picked out and allotting specific time, you can simply focus on you. Find training schedules online based on a specific activity you enjoy, or try the Anytime Fitness workout calendar that is published every month.
  8. Volunteer your time. Whether a small or large commitment, volunteering your time for an organization whose mission you can really get behind can leave you feeling euphoric and help put your stress into perspective.
  9. Purchase a planner and colored pencils. Get rid of the worry of forgetting something on your To-Do List by writing down and color-coordinating your weekly agenda.
  10. Download a brain games app on your phone and take a break. Life is enough work all on its own. Set aside some time for fun while reaping the benefits of boosting your brainpower!
  11. Call a friend you haven’t talked to in awhile. Phone an old friend for your mental and emotional wellbeing. Friends can be great support and sounding-boards to help you problem-solve.
  12. Drop unwanted books in a “Free Little Library.” Share the books you love with your community by donating your old books to a free little library, local school, or discount book retailer.
